“The challenges of formalizing Heritage speakers' syntax: The role of individual variability”

(Liliana Sánchez, The University of Illinois at Chicago)

September 14-15, 2021

9 am - 12 pm

This mini-course will focus on the challenges of positing syntactic representations for speakers with high levels of variability in their judgments and oral production. The need to control for lexical access, frequency, and activation will be discussed, as well as the nature of storage and access to syntactic features.

"Dimensions of (In)definiteness"

(Veneeta Dayal, Yale University)

September 14-15, 2021

2 pm - 5 pm

Noun phrases are often discussed in terms of definite and indefinite reference, but what lies behind these labels is not always clear. In this course we discuss some diagnostics that can be used to give precision to the notions of definiteness and indefiniteness, and the closely related notions of specificity and non-specificity.
